Jordan Clark: 10 He had 10 crucial intercepts, penetrated the game with 813 metres gained and used smart positioning sitting off the stoppages to gain five clearances for the game. That was a half-back master class. 2. Caleb Serong: 10 His run and corridor spread was crucial, gaining 11 inside 50s. He tackled well when Gold Coast took control in the stoppages, then won the clearances himself as the game progressed. Willed his team over the line. 3. Shai Bolton: 10 Spent more time forward with Luke Jackson playing as a midfielder and Nat Fyfe as a midfielder off the bench. But this was a forward performance for the ages, kicking 3.2. And that tackle - that’s not talent, that’s intent! 4. Luke Jackson: 10 Was used perfectly by the coach, who kept him around the ball as a ruck and a midfielder. It paid dividends, with 27 touches, eight inside 50s and seven tackles. If Sean Darcy doesn’t play, this doesn’t happen. 5. Andrew Brayshaw: 10 As always, got plenty of the ball, with 30 disposals, but the desire to work tirelessly was enormous. He kicked a smart snap goal, tackled strongly and had five clearances. Showed enormous courage late to win a game-saving free kick. 6. Patrick Voss: 9 If Darcy doesn’t play, the kid is second ruck, and perhaps doesn’t kick 3.1. He was strong, powerful and set the tone with the chase, tackle and goal early. Don’t underestimate the influence Josh Treacy is having on his development. 7. Sam Switkowski: 9 Bounced out of the blocks with eight disposals, three tackles, five score involvements and a goal in the first quarter, setting the path for his team. That continued across the game with important handball chains. He finished with 17 touches, eight big tackles and 10 score involvements. 8. Brennan Cox: 9 Notwithstanding the conditions, he kept the dangerous Ben King to 1.1 for the game. Enough said. 9. Matthew Johnson: 9 His use of the handball was first class. He was clean and slick in the contest given the conditions. Just like Bolton, laid a massive tackle to win a free kick when Gold Coast were coming late in the game. 10. Luke Ryan: 8 Hustled Ben Long all game, keeping him to 1.3, which included a couple of shots he was helpless to stop. Big tick. 11. Corey Wagner: 8 A powerful running performance on the wing. His 17 kicks gained 630 metres, along with seven intercepts while supporting the defence. 12. Josh Treacy: 8 His workrate was through the roof, playing high as a leading target and competing all game, along with pressure at ground level. His influence on that game should not be underestimated. 13. Neil Erasmus: 7 Continues to grow with game time. His slick handballs releasing runners was important and his seven tackles kept the pressure up in the midfield. 14. Heath Chapman: 7 Ran and carried the ball despite the tough conditions and had some critical moments with tackles and showed courage to go back with the flight. 15. Bailey Banfield: 7 Intercepted the ball across half back and released teammates by hand. Made a crucial play late to win a contested ball then fed it off to a runner for a Bolton goal. 16. Sean Darcy: 7 Don’t worry about disposals, his 28 hit-outs and going up against Witts were crucial for a number of reasons. Him being in the team means Jackson is a midfielder and Voss stays forward. Great call by the coach, but it’s still horse for courses! 17. Nat Fyfe: 7 This was super planning by the coach. He came on at three quarter time, had seven clean touches and covered the ground better than anyone else. Allows Bolton to spend the whole last quarter forward and he put on a show. 18. Murphy Reid: 7 He was slow to start, possession wise, but stopped the dangerous Daniel Rioli. His handball and overlap game was important and he had a huge last quarter with eight touches. 19. Jye Amiss: 6 Sometimes it’s not your day but it is your moment. Amiss kicked the sealer and is continuing to find ways to impact the game working high up the ground, leading and being a target. 20. Karl Worner: 6 Was solid defensively, but let himself down with a soft-drop goal while not bodying his opponent. 21. Michael Frederick: 5 Kicked a goal with his only touch in the first quarter. He remained quite possession wise after that, but he did lay three tackles. 22. Josh Draper: 2 Looked all at sea at times, with his defending and really struggled in the conditions. Did he injure himself? 23. Jeremy Sharp: 2 Struggled to impact the game on the wing again. He is working hard from goal square to goal square, but can’t get the ball in his hands. WEST COAST 1. Liam Baker 9 Played with absolute intent. He did turn the ball over early with Geelong pressure, but defensively had 10 intercept possessions as part of his 29 touches, providing run and overlap from defence. 2. Oscar Allen 9 Made the absolute most of his opportunities, keeping his team close on the scoreboard. Showed smart forward craft to kick four goals and also had a goal assist 3. Reuben Ginbey 8 Jeremy Cameron kicked five goals, but four came in the last 10 minutes. Ginbey beat him for three-and-a-half quarters in many one-on-one contests and also provided rebound. 4. Matt Flynn 8 Beat Rhys Stanley convincingly for most of the game. Had 13 hit outs, 15 disposals and three clearances. Marked well down the line but tired in the last 15 minutes. 5. Brady Hough 8 Moved onto Bailey Smith late in the second quarter after 25 touches. Kept at the task in the second half to quell the influence of the Geelong star 6. Harley Reid 8 Is now staying in games longer. Had 20 touches, seven clearances, four tackles and kicked 1.1 in the midfield. His defensive transition is still ordinary at times. 7. Jack Hutchinson 8 Had a very good battle with Ollie Dempsey on a wing. Was forced to defend hard early, but was able to build his own game later on. 8. Elijah Hewett 7 Only had two touches in the first quarter, but started winning contest and clearance in the second quarter and finished with 7 clearances. Kicked a classy stoppage goal. 9. Tom Cole 7 He turned the ball over by foot a couple of times, but competed well in one-on-one contests. His 13 handballs in chains of possession were important. 10. Harry Edwards 7 Stood up under siege in the first quarter and had some big spoils. Then was able to penetrate the game with 336 metres gained from 15 disposals. 11. Jack Graham 7 Worked into the speed of a transition game after a quiet first quarter. Decision-making going inside 50 at times was very good. 12. Tim Kelly 6 Had seven handballs in the first quarter getting involved in more chains and his spread when the team won stoppage in the last quarter was important. 13. Jack Williams 6 Played a key forward role and competed well deep, taking marks and kicking 2.1. He also had a goal assist. Worked high to compete and bring the ball to ground 14. Tyrell Dewar 6 Started across half back and was one of a number of defenders with turnover kicks in the first quarter. Became penetrating and gave some bounce off half back later on. 15. Liam Duggan 6 Was hard at it under pressure early with blast kicks from his own defenders. His kicking improved over the game and he played with good intent. 16. Sandy Brock 6 Played tall and small across the game, but had trouble with the nimble Tyson Stengle. Tried to get involved and rebound by hand, which was overdone at times. 17. Noah Long 6 Had a very good first quarter with five touches, but faded as the game went on. He kicked 1.1 and had five inside 50s 18. Liam Ryan 6 Had poor delivery inside 50 early, but he kept working and finished with 10 touches, six score involvements and a goal. 19. Tyler Brockman 5 Had 16 touches at half forward and through the midfield. Also had three inside 50s but didn’t use the ball as well as he normally does. 20. Ryan Maric 5 Played on a wing against Mark Blicavs for a lot of the game and kept him quiet, but he let himself down with poor defending at defensive-50 stoppage, allowing Dempsey a snap goal. 21. Jayden Hunt 5 Was shuffled around in the strategy match-ups and had 12 touches without really penetrating the game. 22. Archer Reid 5 Didn’t get much of the ball, but is competing well as a primary target and played his role as the second ruck. 23. Bo Allan 4 Came on as the substitute in the last quarter and provided run and overlap with four touches.
